A guest’s guide to Diwali
Know what to ask, what to bring, and how to participate respectfully without treating your host as a cultural tour guide.
The most respectful guest is not the person who memorizes every possible Diwali story. It is the person who listens to the invitation, asks practical questions, and follows the host’s lead.
Read the invitation literally
Arrival time, shoes, food, clothing, children, and participation matter more than guessing from a general holiday article.
- Ask whether the event includes prayer, a meal, open flame, or a specific start time.
- Share allergy and access needs early instead of waiting until you arrive.
- If clothing guidance is unclear, ask for a level of formality rather than requesting a costume.
Bring something only when useful
A host may welcome flowers, food, sweets, a small household gift, or nothing at all. Religious objects are not a safe generic gift choice.
- Ask before bringing homemade food and provide complete ingredient information.
- Choose a modest, easy-to-receive gift if the host says gifts are welcome.
- Do not arrive with fireworks, alcohol, or strongly scented items without explicit approval.
Participate without performing
Observe first. A host can explain what guests are welcome to do, but no guest needs to imitate a religious action for enthusiasm.
- Follow guidance around shoes, food, sacred spaces, photography, and flame.
- Ask one sincere question at a natural moment rather than turning dinner into an interview.
- Thank the host for the particular gathering they shared, not for representing an entire culture.
